Sublimating Dreamscape 16:9
Sublimation refers to a physical property of materials, like dry ice, which transition directly from a solid state to its gaseous form, skipping the second liquid state in-between which matter typically progresses through. This occurs through the absorption of energy, causing molecules to vibrate such that they escape their binding forces as vapor. Sublimation is also a psychological concept, a major defence mechanism required when the biological expression of socially unacceptable impulses and energies, such as eroticism and violence, are limited and are required to be transformed into culturally acceptable acts which "serves a higher cultural or socially useful purpose, as in the creation of art or inventions."
Sublimating Dreamscape 16:9 explores these concepts in the abstract process of digital communication whereby our biological thoughts, feelings and impulses can be expressed to others through technology and social media. This skips the process of interpersonal connection that has defined human relationships up until the development of web 2.0, the current internet format characterized by a domination of user interactive applications such as twitter, Facebook, YouTube and more recently Tik Tok, which we experience through the prescribed screen aspect ratio of 16:9.
